Just like the forecast called for, it snowed overnight and this morning.

So now there’s a winter wonderland outside.

It’s 47 degrees and sunny in northwest Illinois on Jan. 24.

I’ll just ignore that I’m looking at this lovely scene from my window at work, as well as that tomorrow’s forecast calls for one to four inches of snow.

Live in the moment, right?

With the temperature reaching 40 degrees again today, I headed to one of my favorite places: the Mississippi River in Moline.

The river is still partially frozen along the shore in places, and the huge puddles along much of the path kept me from walking far. (The mostly mesh tops of my sneakers don’t do very well with water!)

Still, it was so pretty and the fresh air felt so good. And the gulls certainly seem to be enjoying it.

Soon, though not soon enough, I’ll be back to my regular walks down here. Which also reminds me of baseball, since I’d usually listen to whatever my choice of games starting at 6 p.m. Central was each day. (Cardinals, of course, if they were playing out east.) That’s not all that far away either.

Thankfully.

No polar vortex now, which is more than fine with me. A temperature like this at 7:30 p.m. in northwest Illinois can stick around for a while.

Especially because my street is finally almost completely free of snow for the first time in weeks.

Although my remote starter cleared the frost off my windshield and windows, it didn’t do anything to the frost on my side mirrors.

Even the drive to work (OK, it’s only five minutes) didn’t affect it either.

The good news: temperatures above freezing again today. That certainly makes for a happy Friday.

Today was a pretty day, with new snow that fell last night and bright blue skies. It made for a pleasant scene out my office window.

I haven’t seen any critters out there lately, although there were tracks from something leading to and past the tree closest to my window. But in warmer seasons there are rabbits, groundhogs and even deer on occasion. Oh, plenty of squirrels too.

They all make for pleasant distractions.

Since we know a picture is worth 1,000 words, nothing really needs to be said (other than this was the view out my picture window about 10 minutes ago).

If I had my choice of winter and snow scenes, this one would definitely be preferable to the one I drove home in tonight.

Ah, well, Mother Nature didn’t ask my opinion.

January 4: That’s Right, It IS Winter January 4, 2015

So far, this winter’s weather has been good — meaning just one snowstorm back in November and the cold temperatures have been intermittent. On Christmas Day, it was sunny and 50 degrees. I loved it.

Today is sunny also, with bright blue skies as you can see below. But, as you’ll also see, there’s snow on the tree — we received more than two inches overnight. And the temperature has been falling all day. When I woke up this morning, it was 26. It’s 12 now, though with the wind chill (oh, yes, it’s very windy too) it feels like -4, but the temp will be close to that for real overnight. And -4 is what Wednesday’s high is supposed to be.

I live in northwest Illinois. This is winter. Obviously the weather — typical winter weather — is part of the deal. And at times I like it.

Just not at the moment, or for the next several days ahead.

Today is My Least Favorite Day of the Year November 4, 2013

Pitch Black Darkness

I hate when daylight saving time ends — and the Monday after it does is my least favorite day of the year.

I’m tired, just like everyone’s tired, because the extra hour of sleep we received Sunday morning just meant I stayed up later last night.

While the fact it finally was light at 7 a.m. again this morning was welcome, it came with a trade off — the photo above is what it looked like at 5:30 p.m. today outside my office window.

(Perhaps a rough approximation.)

For now the days will still keep getting shorter and it will keep getting darker earlier and earlier until Dec. 21. That’s seven more weeks of progressive darkness. Ugh.

And, to top off all the darkness and approaching winter, baseball is now done — although that does give me more free time to start reading the stack of baseball books that are my off-season project.

But that can be for another night.

For this one, when it feels like it’s been night for about 12 hours so far, sleep sounds like a much better option.
